Nearly 800,000 Canadians a month use a food bank?
That is unacceptable to me!
All Canadians have a part to play in reducing hunger in Canada, and the federal government needs to take additional action. In a typical month, 794,738 Canadians need to use a food bank to make ends meet. Families with children, seniors, people with disabilities and even people with full-time jobs are helped by community food banks right across Canada. In fact, 13.6% of people who use food banks have jobs, yet still cannot afford to feed their families. 37% of those helped by food banks are children. In 2009, the level of food bank use in Canada was 18% higher than in 2008. In honour of Hunger Awareness Day, I support Food Banks Canada in urging the Federal Government to take action:
- Develop a National Anti-Poverty Strategy
- Reform the Employment Insurance system to make it more fair
- Move forward on a $5,000 Canada Child Tax Benefit
- Invest in affordable housing and child care
