The First Great MPP Food Sort

Across Ontario, food banks will be inviting MPPs to visit their warehouses to sort food and discuss ways we can continue to work together to fight hunger in the province. The OAFB will be hosting the flagship event at the Mississauga Food Bank with the Honorable Charles Sousa, MPP Harinder Malhi, and MPP Sophie Kiwala.

Greater Vancouver Food Bank City-Wide Food Drive

City-Wide Food Drive – The week prior to the food drive, volunteers organized by the BC Thanksgiving Food Drive, will leave environmentally-friendly, paper donation bags on the doorsteps of over 30,000 households in our catchment area. More information about the Food Drive can be found here.

Friends In Need Food Bank Society Thanksgiving Food Drive

British Columbia | Friends In Need Food Bank Society

Volunteers deliver donation bags and information to 4800 homes September 15 & 16 and on Saturday September 17 (10 am to 2 pm) they return to those homes and gather the bags filled with food. The bags are then delivered to the LDS Church on 207th Street where more volunteers weigh the donations and pack them into boxes to be delivered to the Friends in Need Food Bank.

Edmonton, City Wide Door-to-Door Food Drive

Alberta | Edmonton's Food Bank

Volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be collecting non-perishable food donations throughout the city to help stock Edmonton’s Food Bank shelves. “For some, eating three meals a day is a luxury. The Food Bank must ensure continued flow of food into the warehouse and out to people in need,” said Marjorie Bencz, CM, Executive Director. Notices will be delivered throughout the city to single family homes.

If you receive a notice, please leave your donation in a visible spot on your porch or doorstep by 10 AM on Saturday, September 17 for volunteers to pick up. Multi-family homes such as apartments or townhouses will not be receiving notices for accessibility reasons. If your house did not receive a notice and you would like to participate, food donations can be made at any City of Edmonton fire hall or at major grocery stores throughout Edmonton.

Master Chef Cook-Off

Each chef will cook an appetizer, entrée and dessert using groceries accessed from the food bank. Members of the public will also gain valuable tips around food preparation and making your dollar stretch further for meals. More information about the event can be found here.

Daily Bread Food Bank’s Launch of Who’s Hungry Report

Waterloo Region – Rogers TV Hunger Awareness Week Segment

Waterloo Region – Our local Rogers TV Channel 20 is running a Hunger Awareness Segment each day on ‘daytime’ shown at 1pm,3pm,5pm and 11pm.

Monday Martin Bauman, journalist, completed a cross-Canada bicycle trek, reflecting on mental health, the transformative power of conversation and community connection

Tuesday Joe Mancini, Executive Director of The Working Centre, reflecting on importance of bringing programs to where people are  The Psychiatric Outreach Project is a strong local example.

Wednesday Chief Bryan Larkin, Waterloo Region Police Services. The police see mental health affecting all ages, from youth to young adults to elders.  Chief Larkin reflected on what police are seeing in our community and how the work of programs and services of the food assistance network are helping.

Thursday Chris Scott, singer song writer. Chris’s song All It Takes reflected on the difficulties faced by many people and how taking the time to show some compassion & understanding can make a difference in people’s lives.

Friday Wendi Campbell, Executive Director of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region will provide context to local food assistance numbers, programs and how to help this Fall.

Our event will have 2 parts, the first will utilize the energy of the 1st Orillia Venture Scouts, who have volunteered to harvest several large crab apple trees that are currently not used by the land owner. The second part will be a canning/preserving workshop, open to the public, where we will share our preserving skills while creating food products from the harvested fruit that can be distributed to those in need at the Sharing Place Food Bank.
